Boca police charge pair with fraud at local bank

Boca Raton police recently arrested a man and woman on fraud charges, and continue to probe the case in conjunction with investigators from the Florida Department of Financial Services.

Arrested were Johnson Cuffy, 30, of NW 26th Avenue, Boca Raton and Joy Williams, 29, of Fort Lauderdale, said police.

Boonenberg said Williams and Cuffy were charged with uttering a forged check, grand theft and organized scheme to defraud. Cuffy, who is on probation for grand theft and mortgage fraud, she said, was also charged with violation of probation. Cuffy is being held at the county jail without bond, said police.

Boca police said the incident occurred at Chase Bank on NE Mizner Boulevard. Boonenberg said the manager manager reported that a woman who cashed a check for $2,300 the day before returned that day to cash a $2,500 check. Both checks were drawn on a fraudulent account, said police.

Bank officials had been alerted by a resident of New York who told them her identity had been stolen, and her personal information was used to apply for a loan and a checking account.

Boonenberg said police located Williams in her car in the parking lot along with $1,000 in cash, recent bank deposit slips and a paper with two business names, addresses and account numbers on them.

Police said Cuffy arrived soon after and he and Williams tried to explain the situation.  Boonenberg said the stories conflicted, so the suspects were taken into custody.

Anyone who suspects being a victim of the suspects is asked to call State of Florida Department of Financial Services Detective Steven Grenier at (561) 837-5632.
