Delray Vice-Mayor Montague stepping down, moving to California

Delray Beach City Commissioner Brenda Montague, who was chosen the city’s vice-mayor as she began her second term on the city’s legislative panel in March 2008, is stepping down.

Montague announced she is resigning from her position effective Friday, July 18.  She said her family is being offered a professional opportunity in California that will require them to permanently relocate to the area soon.

While the move provides a great opportunity, she said, it is difficult to leave the city that she has become so involved in.  “Although we are looking forward to a new and exciting life, I regret that it will take us away from Delray Beach and Palm Beach County, which has been our home for over twenty years” the vice-mayor said.

A resident of Delray Beach since 1998, she has served in a number of volunteer positions.  She is also a member of many committees in Delray’s downtown and neighborhood redevelopment efforts, including the Southwest Redevelopment Plan, the Community Land Trust, NW 5th Avenue and Atlantic Grove.

She served on the Delray Beach Community Redevelopment Agency for more than five years.

Montague was elected to the City Commission in March 2006. Because she and Fred Fetzer were unchallenged this past March, no election was held and they automatically moved on to second terms.

She was deputy vice-mayor during her first term.

City Manager Dave Harden told the Boca Raton News that the city charter is unspecific about how to replace members who have resigned.

Normally, he said, the commission takes two meetings to select an appointee – and if they can’t agree on a replacement, the vacancy goes to a special election.

“There have been three or four resignations since I have been here,” he said.  “And every time, they came to an agreement.”
