Jewish Nation Fund names Brogan, Levy ‘Tree of Life’

October 9th, 2008

FROM STAFF REPORTS

The Jewish National Fund has named Florida Atlantic University President Frank Brogan and Great American Farms President and CEO Alan J. Levy as its Tree of Life™ Award recipients.

The Tree of Life™ Award Dinner, chaired by Debbie and Myron Stayman and Dr. Ira and June Gelb, will take place at the Design Center of the Americas in Fort Lauderdale Nov. 6 at 6:30 p.m.

“It is our privilege to present the prestigious Tree of Life™ Award to two outstanding community leaders and philanthropic individuals, FAU President Frank Brogan and Great American Farms President and CEO Alan J. Levy," said Debbie Stayman, dinner cochair. “We are happy to be able to honor them and encourage everyone to support Israel and this wonderful organization.”

The Tree of Life™ Award is a humanitarian award presented to individuals for outstanding community involvement, dedication to the cause of American-Israeli friendship and devotion to peace and the security of human life.

The name, Tree of Life, symbolizes JNF’s efforts to reclaim and develop the land of Israel from barren and uninhabitable into a land of lush green forests and fields, productive farmlands and varied tourism and recreation facilities.

She said Brogan has been a champion of public education all his life. In addition, he has used his speaking ability to crusade in the fight against breast cancer, which claimed the life of his first wife, Mary. He has received a public service award from the Pioneers in Prostate Cancer.

Involved in the Broward County agricultural community, Alan J. Levy founded and serves as president and CEO of Great American Farms, Inc., a Pompano Beach based agricultural marketing firm.

He currently serves as the United Way chairman for Broward County, was a founding member of the Performing Arts Center Authority for eight years, is a member of the boards of Urban League of Broward, JAFCO, Daniel Cantor Senior Center, Jewish Museum of Florida and the Museum of Art in Fort Lauderdale.

“Proceeds from the dinner will go to Blueprint Negev, JNF’s long term plan to sustainably develop Israel’s Negev Desert,” said June Gelb.

Couvert for the dinner is $120 with a minimum donation of $180 to JNF. For information or to make a reservation, call (561) 447-9733.
