Palm Beach County commissioners have approved an agreement with the Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office (PBSO) to reimburse PBSO $50,000 for implementation of the “Putting Kids First” program.
This project was reviewed and recommended for funding by the Countywide Community Revitalization Team (CCRT) Committee and approved by commissioners last December. The program is in turn part of the Office of Community Revitalization’s (OCR) community revitalization initiatives within unincorporated areas, and the cities of South Bay, Pahokee, and Belle Glade, commissioners said.
Commissioners created the OCR in 2003. In addition to work on community and neighborhood revitalization projects such as paving, drainage, water and sanitary sewer systems, neighborhood parks, and community centers, OCR also makes specific program recommendations. The OCR received a budgeted allocation of $2.2 million in general funds for FY 2007-2008 – and later identified the Putting Kids First program as one that should receive funding.
Commissioners said the $50,000 would purchase book bags, school supplies, food, and other miscellaneous program expenses.
PBSO Donations
Separately, commissioners approved a budget transfer of $80,760 from the Law Enforcement Trust Fund (LETF) to the PBSO. Florida statutes require that no less than 15 percent of the LETF’s previous year’s revenues be used for the support or operation of drug treatment, drug abuse education, drug prevention, crime prevention, safe neighborhood and school resource officer programs of various non-profit organizations.
The PBSO’s FY 2008 estimated donation requirement is $122,726 and will be given to the following groups in the following amounts:
- Extended Hands Community Outreach, Inc; $25,860
- Faith-Hope-Love-Charity, Inc; $25,000
- The Juvenile Transition Center, Inc; $29,900
Extended
Commissioners also approved an extension to March 2009 of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) Florida Consortium 2007 Paul Coverdell National Forensic Sciences Improvement grant.
The National Institute of Justice (NIJ) awarded these funds to the FDLE to in turn be used in the “2007 Paul Coverdell National Forensic Sciences Improvement Grant program. Earlier this year, the PBSO was awarded $43,701 in Coverdell funds to improve the quality of forensic services. The PBSO’s Technical Services Division is using the funds for training, said commissioners
