Vegso Family Foundation donates half-million dollars to The Haven

September 7th, 2008

The Haven, an alternative home for young men ages 11 to 18, has received a half-million gift from the Vegso Family Foundation to completely redesign and renovate one of the four cottages on its five-acre campus in Boca Raton.

“The Vegso Family Foundation has been a major supporter of The Haven for many years,” said Executive Director, Don Stewart.  “We are thankful for the commitment to our program and for on-going support.”

The home-like cottages provide a safe, structured and nurturing setting for the young men living at The Haven, where they attend school and become actively involved in the community.  A professional staff guides and supports them along the way, teaching life lessons that will prepare them for the years to come.

“My wife, Anne, and I are proud to partner with The Haven,” said Peter Vegso.  “We’re very grateful for the work they do to make a positive impact on young men.  We’re happy to help.”

Since starting the foundation in 1977, the Vegsos have devoted much time and money to projects benefiting people in need.  One of these projects was the Junior League of Boca Raton’s Community Outreach Center, now known as the Vegso Community Resource Center.  Anne Vegso has been active with the Junior League since 1991 and was its “Woman Volunteer of the Year” in 2005.

“I enjoy giving back to the community,” said Anne Vegso. “It’s extremely rewarding to make a difference in young people’s lives.”

Peter Vegso is the owner of Health Communications, Inc. (HCI), the
international book publisher best known for the “Chicken Soup for
the Soul” series.  HCI has been publishing self-help books, magazines and conducting conferences since 1977.

The Haven, founded in 1976, provides an alternative home for young men, ages 11 up to 18, who have been placed in protective care by the state of Florida, said Stewart.  The Haven’s programs are designed to foster the development of each young man’s self-esteem and independence in a safe, loving and stable alternative home while teaching the skills necessary for them to become self-sufficient and proud adults.

The Haven is nationally accredited by the Council on Accreditation (COA), and recently received its fourth-consecutive four-star rating from Charity Navigator, a national charity watchdog group.
