FROM STAFF REPORTS
The South County Courthouse in Delray Beach will be closed today and Friday so offices can move into a newly constructed portion of the facility.
The courthouse reopens Monday in the new 75,000-square-foot addition connected directly to the existing 68,000-square-foot courthouse at 200 W. Atlantic Ave.
Clerk & Comptroller Sharon Bock said her new branch facility “will now have seating for 120 customers and nine more windows to allow us to serve customers more quickly and efficiently.”
It will also include an enhanced self-service center with a Legal Aid attorney and a new “2-1-1” phone with access to additional information, referrals, counseling and more.
Monday’s opening marks the completion the South County Courthouse $20 million expansion.
Judicial, magistrate, state attorney and public defender offices will also relocate to the new division. Some of those offices will move back into the existing facility, built in 1989, after it undergoes about eight months of renovation.
The addition has a probate court, three new courtrooms, three hearing rooms and office space for all courthouse functions. The new two-story lobby has a spiral staircase, with light shining in from the east windows.
The main entrance has been constructed on 2nd Avenue facing east. Parking will be in the garage until the end of the Phase 3 renovation. The south lot behind the courthouse will be open after Phase 3.
Some things will remain the same in the old section of the courthouse. Visitors will still be able to see the column that was salvaged from the 1916 historic county courthouse located in West Palm Beach.
