Work crews are scheduled today to begin the installation of new doors and windows and, in some cases, attic insulation at several homes near the Boca Raton Airport.

The effort is part of the  QuieterHome Program, funded through grants from state and federal agencies. The work is being done by C&S Engineers Inc.

Timeka Carter, homeowner liaison for C&S, told the Boca Raton News said that 10 homes have been selected and assessed as part of the first phase of the project. The homes will be done three at a time, she said.

The first 10 homes being done are in the area of highest aircraft noise exposure. The Federal Aviation Administration establishes guidelines to reduce the interior noise levels in the affected homes.  The target noise level for the interior of living areas in a home is 45 decibels, the agency said.

Deadening airport noise mainly involves replacing doors and windows, said Carter.

Once the 10 homes are done, she said, another 35 may be considered, perhaps in May or June. Residential structures within the FAA-approved 65 decibel day-night noise level contours may be eligible to participate in the sound insulation program.  The decibel contours – shown on a map of the airport and its surroundings – is available at the authority office.

Homeowners who want to find out if they may be eligible can call C&S at 561-544-8077.

C&S Engineers is a national leader in residential sound insulation programs. The QuieterHome program is currently being used in such areas as Anchorage, Buffalo, Cleveland, Detroit, Guam, Oakland County, Mich., Pittsburgh, San Diego and Tulsa.
