The federal government has reopened a grant program that will allow police departments to seek funding to purchase bulletproof vests.
The Boca Raton City Council has given City Manager Leif Ahnell the go-ahead to apply for the money.
To date, Ahnell said, “the city has received reimbursements in the amount of $105,841 for the purchase of 324 ballistic vests.
If the city manager’s request for 2008 is approved, he said he will purchase 25 more vests for police officers.
He said the federal government will cover half the cost of the vests, $6,931, and the city will come up with the rest.
The money is coming from the Bureau of Justice Assistance. Ahnell said the agency recently reopened funding for fiscal year 2008. “This is the 10th year of continuous financial support for state and local units of government,” he said.
“The grant is allocated through the U.S. Department of Justice to provide funds for the purchase of ballistic and stab resistance vests meeting National Institute of Justice standards for law enforcement officers.”
