A courier bringing jewelry to a store on St. Andrews Boulevard in Boca Raton Wednesday shot a robber dead after four men broke into his SUV and stole a duffel bag containing gems, said police.
Public Information Officer Sandra Boonenberg said two male jewelry couriers arrived at a strip mall in the 21000 block of St. Andrews Boulevard about 12:30 p.m. and parked the car near the St. Moritz Jewelry store.
She said one of the jewelry couriers remained in the parked vehicle while the other went into the jewelry store.
The courier in the vehicle was approached by four suspects who smashed the passenger window of the SUV and grabbed the duffel bag. Boonenberg said it contained “in excess of $100,000 in jewelry.”
During the incident, she said, a number of shots were fired. One of the robbers, an unidentified man, was hit. She said the other three suspects fled in a waiting van, which was facing north on St. Andrews Boulevard.
The man who was shot was taken to the trauma unit at Delray Beach Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, said Boonenberg.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Detective Juan Carlos Pijuan at (561) 416-3331.
