Last weekend was a landmark one for the Saint Andrew’s Swimming
Club, which won its first ever team title at the 2007 Palm Beach County
Sprint Championships at Wellington High.
The Scots totaled 1,134.5 points, with the Lake Lytal Lightning
second with 1,047.5 points.
The Florida Atlantic Swim Team was fifth with 499.5 points.
Swimmers competed in divisions ranging from 6 and under to 15 and
over, and trophies were given to the top three finishers in each group.
“It’s a nice step in the development of our club,”
Coach Sid Cassidy said. “For a club that’s less than 30
months old, to be the best team in Palm Beach County, it’s really
a tribute to the families and to the swimmers here. It was a very
nice Christmas present for the coaching staff.”
Andrew Grassano won the 15 and over group with 70 points. Saint
Andrew’s School swimmer and club teammate Ramon Walton was second
with 51 points.
Jenna Gallo was third in the girls 15 or over group with 38 points.
Kevin Matheus won the 13-14 title with 83 points; teammate Jason
McCormick was second with 55.
Madelynn Camp won the overall title in the girls 13-14 group with
69 points.
Camp won the 200 free in 2:02.20, the 200 IM in 2:19.97, the 100
fly in 1:05.39, and she was second in the 100 IM with a time of 1:06.10.
“I was really happy and I was surprised that I got first,”
she said. “It felt really good and I was proud to be a part
of this (first team win). And I was really proud that I tried to give
as many points to it as I did, and it helped a lot.”
Quinn Cassidy won the 11-12 boys title with 90 points; teammate
Chase Koplow was second with 48.
Connor Predmore tied for third in the 9-10 group with 41 points,
and the Scots had a clean sweep in the 9-10 girls division, with Chelsea
Scuderi winning with 65 points. Courtney Bober was second with 61,
and Megan Moroney was third with 54. Moroney did not swim Sunday as
she had a church commitment, but she so dominated the field Friday
and Saturday that her point total was still good enough to earn her
a trophy.
Carson Fregosi also excelled with a fourth-place finish in the 7-8
group with 47 points, and he was second in the 25 free, the 25 back,
25 breast and 25 fly.
Fregosi, 8, was also surprised at his showing. He has only been
swimming with the club for over a year, and credits his improvement
to the fact “I practice a lot.”
Other swimmers who excelled were Genevieve Aube (second in 15 and
over 100 back and 50 back), Sebastian Aube (second in 15 and over
50 back), Devin Bober (third in 11-12 50 breast), Kyle Freeeman (third
in the 13-14 100 fly and 100 breast), Sean Grady (first in 13-14 200
free and 200 IM), Maggie Johnson (third in 7-8 25 back), Holli Pisarski
(first in 15 and over 50 breast, second in 100 breast and third in
100 free) and Katie Zientarski (third in 11-12 100 fly and 100 free).
The club will host the second annual Scottie Invitational in the last
weekend in January at the Duff Tyler Aquatic Complex. Ages of the
competitors will range from 10 to 15 and over.
The Junior Olympic Championships follow at the end of February in
Coral Springs.
