Florida Lacrosse Cup is Jan. 3
By Mario Sarmento SPORTS EDITOR
Last week, Saint Andrew’s coach Jeff Goldberg was part of a press conference at BankAtlantic Center to announce the Florida Lacrosse Cup between the Toronto Rock and New York Titans Jan. 3.
It’s being billed as “Florida’s first professional lacrosse game,” and it’s a barometer to gauge interest in the sport in this area.
Lacrosse is gaining popularity across the state, led of course by Goldberg’s multiple state champion Saint Andrew’s School boys team, and the girls version of the sport has also earned notice.
Goldberg and good friend Kevin Finneran, who were both players in the National Lacrosse League (NLL), are part of a Florida Group that is interested in NLL investment.
“We’re trying to see if we can find Florida as being an expansion team,” said Goldberg, and if that is the case, he said he will be involved in some capacity.
Goldberg has fielded offers to coach NLL franchises before, but he turned them down because he didn’t want to uproot his family and leave Florida.
But if this venture comes about, it would be the best opportunity Goldberg has had yet. Goldberg hopes the turnout will warrant the new franchise, saying, “Obviously, I’m optimistic.”
Goldberg played for the New Jersey Saints from 1988-1990, and if the Florida franchise is given the greenlight, it would be the 14th in the league.
