Lynn doubles team wins ITA
NEWS STAFF REPORTS Lynn University’s men’s tennis team won the ITA Fall Regional doubles title for the third straight year, while falling just short of a three-peat sweep in both singles and doubles.
Julien Carsuzaa and Alessandro Sarra claimed the doubles crown and will advance to the ITA National Small College Championships in Mobile, Ala.
Carsuzaa opened the day looking for his third consecutive singles title after winning the Southeast Region as a sophomore and a junior. A day after a grueling schedule that saw him playing three matches, including a hard-fought three-set showdown against teammate and fellow seasoned bulldog Tomas Racak, Carsuzaa fell in the finals to rival Barry’s Ales Svigelj 7-5, 6-2.
Collecting himself for his second championship match of the day, Carsuzaa then teamed with Sarra to make sure the Fighting Knights didn’t leave Georgia empty-handed. The duo cruised to an 8-4 victory over Barry’s Emanuel Fraitzl and Andrew Sharnov 8-4 for the title and a trip to Mobile.
Carsuzaa, a four-time All-American, previously won the 2006 Southeast Region doubles title as a sophomore with former Lynn standout and current assistant coach Dennis Riegraf.
The tandem went on to win not only the national draw, but also the Knights’ first ITA "Super Bowl" of Small College Tennis title of any kind in program history. Continuing play at the ITA Indoor Nationals, the pair went on to defeat the doubles team from defending Division I National Champions Pepperdine University.
Sarra and Carsuzaa travel to Mobile Oct. 16-19 for the ITA National Small College Championships at the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center.
Alexandre rescues Knights A pair of goals by Jean Alexandre, the last of which came with two seconds left in regulation, helped lift Lynn University’s men’s soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Flagler. The second-ranked Fighting Knights staved off the upset bid to improve to 9-0 overall.
With the game tied 1-1, Gabe Taboada sailed his corner kick towards the back post. Sam Craven’s header on net was blocked by the Saints defense, but Alexandre was there to knock in the rebound for his fifth game-winning goal of the year.
The normally defensive Joe Buppert set up Lynn’s first score when his cross was headed in by Alexandre in the 71st minute. The senior forward has now scored 12 goals and 28 points, both career highs. The Blue and White return to action Wednesday at 3 p.m. when they host Tampa.
Ortiz scores again to lead Knights past Regis Two second half goals catapulted Lynn University’s women’s soccer team to a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Regis Sunday.
Melissa Ortiz notched her team-leading 13th goal of the season and Molly Anderson scored for the second straight game. The Fighting Knights went undefeated in September (6-0-2) and are now 7-1-2 overall.
The Fighting Knights return to action Sunday, October at 1 p.m. when they host the defending NCAA Division II National Champions Tampa. Fans can follow the action live by logging on to www.lynn.edu/athletics and selecting the “live audio” and “live stats” links.
