Scots, Bobcats split at dual meet

By Mario Sarmento

It was a late-season showdown designed to replicate the conditions of the upcoming county and state meets, and the competition was certainly in that class as Boca Raton High took on Saint Andrew’s School in a dual swim meet Wednesday between two of the best teams in the area.

The Scots claimed a victory for the boys, 182-133, while the defending state champion Bobcats girls continued to roll this season with a 184-131 win.

“The boys and the girls are looking stronger than they were last year at this point in the season,” Boca Raton coach Eric Hill said. “I feel real confident about how we’re heading into the postseason.”

Fallon Fitzpatrick won the girls 200 free in a time of 1:59.34 and the 100 butterfly in 1:00.43, Charlotte Williams captured the 200 IM in 2:13.00, Breanna Merrill won the 50 free in 26.22, Jackie Ring took the 100 free in 54.43, and Danielle Smith won the 100 backstroke in 1:00.46.

The girls also won the 400 free relay and the 200 medley relay.

It wasn’t a clean sweep though, as the Scots’ Amanda Ford won the 500 free and Emily Norton snuck in a victory in the 100 breaststroke.

“For Emily Norton to step up and win that breaststroke is very impressive, because she’s just learning how to swim it, and she’s going to be real dangerous,” Scots coach Sid Cassidy said. “For somebody who’s in 10th grade, and never done year-round swimming to go 1:08 already in the season, I can see her getting down close to that school record in a couple of years.”

Norton was one of several underclassmen and even middle school students who make up the girls team, which has Cassidy excited about the future.

On the boys’ side, Sid’s son Quinn won two events, the boys 200 IM in 2:03.75 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:02.98.

Sebastien Aube took the 200 free in 1:55.83, Seth Weil won the 50 free in 22.41, Ramon Walton captured the 100 backstroke in 58.39, and the boys won the 200 medley relay and the 400 free relay.

“Our boys team is as strong as we’ve had certainly since I’ve been here,” Cassidy said.
“We’re deep and we’ve got a great deal of seniors.”

Boca Raton wasn’t shut out though, as Stephen Cjaza won the 100 butterfly, Alex Boettcher took the 100 freestyle and Sean Grady won the 500 free. The boys also won the 200 free relay.

Legendary Saint Andrew’s coach Duff Tyler was on hand to see the meet, which Cassidy and Hill want to repeat next year.

“We’ll see them again at Lake Lytal’s pool at the counties and we wanted that nighttime experience,” Cassidy said.
